Binding suggestions

Post by Ben-Had »

Just got a sinker redwood top with IRW B/S's. Looking for suggestions on binding type to use. Thanks

If you want to contrast with the body/top, I think curly maple is great stuff. It's not white like plastic, but more subtle and, under finish, adds a nice warmth.

Ebony is nice for something that is attractive but not 'busy'.

Good luck whatever you choose!

Oh wait - bloodwood, once it's finished, loses it's red glare and gets real mellow looking and might just set the whole thing off nicely.

If I were to mention all possible binding materials, I would be certain to win the compliment!

Don't forget ebony, as long as someone else bends it.

I think curly maple would look real nice, I'd like to use it on my next one, wondering if it should be quarter sawn or flat sawn.

Maccassar Ebony or Mad Rosewood have nice browns that may play nicely with your top. I'm finishing a redwood topped guitar with Mad Rose and it looks really nice together. Both would need side purfs...

Or go stealth mode: IRW with a maple side purf and top purfs to match your rosette.

Darren - may I ask where you got the redwood top?
Thanks

I think the maple would look very good. I also did a EIRW OM with Koa binding. Didn't think it would look all that good, but it turned out wonderful. Do that with a simple black purfling, it would be subtle but sophisticated. I was thinking maybe padauk, one of my favorite woods, but it will eventually mellow to a rich carmal brown, and would get lost in the EIRW.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

Dave B, David, Ken - I think I'm going with MAPLE. My compliments to you all.
Thanks for the pic Ken, that's what tip the scales.

Compliments are nice, thanks, but I still want to know if it should be Q/S or F/S.
