how to hold guitar while spraying?

Sprayed 2 coats of shellac and 9 coats of lacquer so far this weekend. The handle I made works fine, but I need to add some weight to the end to counterbalance the weight of the guitar. As it is it is tough on the wrist to hold it up for spraying.

Rick, that's why I anchor mine through the end pin hole. It makes the balance of the guitar a whole lot easier and when you're done you just ream the hole you drilled for the hanger bolt for the end pin. I use the double ended screw type.

This may be too late but this is what I came up with this weekend. The nice thing about it is that I used parts I already had: The base is from my home-made go-bar deck and the uprights are the pieces I use to hold my mold together. It is actually quite simple ... I bought a 1/4" eye-bolt that screws into the extra hole in the dovetail neck that came on my Martin Kit and the other hole is for the neck strap pin. I happened to have a 5' drill bit that had a 3/16" shaft that I used for the bottom of the guitar but I think you can buy a 3/16" rod from Home Depot. A dowel would probably work too. Hope this helps - it's quite simple and works like a charm ...

That's funny, I originally built something that looked EXACTLY like that, but abandoned it because of concerns about being able to get good spray coverage at the ends. Did you encounter that problem?

No, I had the same concern but mounted it up high enough on the uprights that there really isn't any issue. When turned vertically, it's very simple to reach the bottom and top with the spray.

Thats a cool set up. I have a stick that I bolt on the neck block and clamp to my work bench. It is less than ideal ,but gets the job done. I find that it is a bit too low and I need to crouch down too much which puts a strain on my old bones. Especially my back. At my advanced age (37) I can't really do the type of bending I used to.
