OLF SJ

Post by Bronco 2025 »

Picking up on a project I started some time ago…
Had to re-register. Forgot my password & could not sign-in to post or view pics. Thx to the Admin for my access
😉
What started were plans for an OLF SJ that has taken a different twist. Trying to bend the side Australian Blkwd proved to be difficult for me using a bending iron. They cracked, so Tippie did bent them for me on another side set I sent him. TY John!

Radiusing the top with 28 ft dish (OLF spec) & again it splintered & torn a piece off the top edge. Had no choice but to plane/sand the sides down. It’s not as deep now which is OK by m, as a I like a ‘not so deep’ acoustic. More in keeping with OM’s or 0000 depth
.
Template with bracing lines drawn is orig OLF design. Per Tippies suggestion, I rearranged the top bracing that I’m about to do. Top is Sinker Rdwd. Don't look at it, it might split on you  The neck, not sure what it will be. I have a number to choose from…

Need to radius the back, but I only have 20 ft @ 15 ft dishes. OLF spec is 25 ft dish...?
Sides Height: Heel 3 1/16” - Tail 3 3/4” ~ Back is already braced & all bracing is Adirondack…

Got the Heel & Tail blocks in today as well as the Kerfing. Since it's going to be a M&T neck joint, I needed to drill a hole for the bolt. Counter sunk the bore but realized, I should've done that B4 drilling for the bolt...
Been awhile since my last build. How easy we forget...

The following day, the Peones went on for side support.

Excuse the muliple pics. Could not delete the duplicates!

Hmm..
Although I posted the above description & pics over a week ago, it still ‘needs approval by a Mod”…
It posted w/o a wait (approval) in the forum introductions page?
I’m going ahead & post further progress on the OLF build as see what happens

Got the braces glued-up in a Go-Bar Deck & took a stab at bending the wood bindings. I only broke 5 pieces till I finally got it right 😋
Also omitted the popsicle brace in favor of a trapezoid support for fingerboard extension

Took me a bit to get the box together, minus the binding.
Laying a straightedge across the top (w/o neck in place), I see about a little more than 1/8” @ bridge location.
Here’s where something is awry?
Putting the neck in place, there’s quite a gap presenting itself, tween the soundhole & where the bridge will be.
Would appreciate advise on a fix (if possible?) before I take a chisel to the heel (tenon)…

Just eyeballing the photo, it looks like the body at the neck joint is not perpendicular, and that has put the neck quite far out of whack. If it is the way it's supposed to be, you have to take a lot off the lower part of the heel to allow the neck to come down in line with the top of the guitar. I'm not sure there's enough wood in the lower part of the heel to do that. Bruce W.

It was really out of whack!
It’s amazing what a bench sander can do 😙
Had to take off some of the lower part of sides at heel, but it gave me a good amount of perpendicular with my square. That, & working on the tenon w/a chisel, I got to where…I believe it will resolve the problem.
A little flossing of the heel when I’m further along should make
it right? “1/16” off the top of bridge w/ frets installed” 😎
