Hawaiian Koa parlor guitar reading for final sanding and fin

Post by johnnparchem »

I finished the construction of the “create from scratch” guitar that I have been making under the guidance of Rick Davis at Sound Guitar Workshop. I was really excited to carve my own neck. Once I learned the correct way to use a rasp the neck pretty much carved itself.
I am building this as another guitar for my daughter. The 12 fret parlor is a great size for her. Doing a custom neck allowed me to minimize the fret board size and thickness of the neck to fit her hands. All in all I am really happy with the way the guitar is turning out.
Being a minimalist I kept the guitar relatively unadorned, but my daughter got to pick out the fret board inlays.
Now I just need to see it though the finishing process.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

Nice color contrast. I like the parlor style, been thinking about making one (sometime).

Looking really good John,
Isn't fun to make your own neck? Probably the most challenging aspect of the craft. We will look forward to seeing pics of this one done.

Thanks for looking and the comments.

I still find setting the neck angle on the cheeks the most challanging task. I am horrible with sanding blocks and tend to make a nice curved surface for the neck to rock on. I am switching toward using chisels and scrappers to set the neck angle. I spend more time on that one task than the rest of the neck (or so it seemed.)

Don't egg me on you can be sure I have a lot of pictures. I will post the next set of pictures after I finish the guitar.

I did add my current moon and hawk logo inlay. (although it looks a little more like a crow)

Great looking guitar, John! I really like the dark bindings on it. What are they?
