I never kept track. Knowing how much I spent would scare me too much! :-)
That sounds like a good idea to keep the mind healthy and happy LOL.

I have an instrument built by James Olson. I built my first guitar about 8 years ago. The Olson is superior in fit and finish. I have loaned the Olson to a friend since I prefer to play one of the instruments that I have built.
Wow! I don't ever think I'll get to a level where I can say I prefer one of my guitars to an Olson(!!!). That is amazing! But I do think your example shows the main attraction of building your own guitar - that you can get a guitar that sounds really really good! And in that context the money spent doesn't seem too bad LOL.
While it's amusing (or possibly appalling) to think of what else one could have spent the money on that we have invested in ( or squandered on) tools and wood, I think moat of us aren't building guitars while considering the economics of doing it.
We're doing it because we find it enjoyable. We don't need to justify that to anybody.. And if your Significant Other gripes about how much you're spending, tell them it's cheaper than golf or booze, and you aren't out late at night getting into trouble.
Don't believe everything you know.
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.

That's very very true! This hobby has been the most expensive hobby I've ever gotten into, but at the same time it's one of the most rewarding.
And as you say, it is one of the "healthier" hobbies to have. Did you know, in a poll about what are the most attractive hobbies people could have, woodworking and music instrument playing were in the top 5? Our hobby combines those 2!
