Post LMI closure (2024) source for 24.9" pre-slotted fretboards?

Post by nkwak »

Good morning, everyone.

I'm about to make the neck blank for my fourth build and I'm not set up yet to slot my own fretboards. My third build has been 24.9" short scale and I'd like to do the same with No. 4. I bought its fretboard 5 years ago at LMI though and Stewmac isn't showing the option so I have to look elsewhere. Since this is still a "hobby" (according to my wife who controls the purse strings on big ticket items) I figure it's probably cheaper to continue buying my fretboards preslotted rather than spend over $400 for the kit and kaboodle at Stewmac to do my own.

Look up 'Birkonium', Mr. Birko makes a business of making slotted and shaped fretboards.

Another option is Allied Lutherie in Burllington, VT. Slotting is offered under their CNC parts.

I've been doing all my fretboard with this setup for 14 years. Inexpensive plastic miter box either an indexing pin installed. I'm using the old style LMI slotting jigs. You may be able to find one used or perhaps the Stewmac jigs can work the same way.
Very inexpensive once you have the slotting template.

My setup is like Kevin's except for the templates. I found a place online (ebay I think) called G.M.I.. They are in Greece. Their templates are not very expensive and are stainless steel and also have two scales on each template. Maybe it's just me, but I find acrylic templates a little too delicate.
