you have too large a motor I have the same set up and use a 1/4 hp be very careful that can grab and through a body in an instant
I have mine set so the motor is on a hinge and its weight keeps the tension but its not so hard as it can slip if it grabs.
I had seen a guy destroy a guitar with too powerful a motor

Actually the motor is on a pivot rod only the motor weight puts tension on the pully. I run it at about 1000rpm.
I can stall it out if I want.
Yes I'm aware of the possible grabbing so I am careful
When I was making knives I had one grabbed on a small high speed buffer once(only one time out of hundreds made) and it slammed into the floor....scary.
