Question re: fingerboard binding
Question re: fingerboard binding
I've seen a couple of bound fretboards where it appears that the frets were installed first as in a normal unbound fashion - i.e., no tang to extend over the binding. Then the fretted board was glued to a neck that was wide enough to accommodate binding, then the binding installed.
These were electric guitars; is this done on acoustics as well? I don't think I've ever played one with that particular fretboard treatment.

But hey, it's personal choice! If you like it, try it. You can always pull the frets and do it properly ...
LOL! Well if you put it like that... :-) actually, I think it looks a little funny. The latest Stewmac newletter had an article on the Gibson method you described.

Re: Question re: fingerboard binding
I am with Running dog here . Here is a simple tip to do a bound board . I used a piece of Oak that was handy and well quartered. I glued a rail to one side that is just about .125 thick. I have another that is about as thick but 1 inch wide that is pivoted in the middle . This allows me to wedge in the fretboard with the binding. I can then fret the board in this block. pre dress frets then do the clean up. The key here is to get the binding scraped down before fretting . Use the wedge to glue in the binding . works good for me
