Closed Box - 20's Style OS Stella Grand Concert

Post by glasalle1 »

Been getting some quality time in the workshop for a change! Working on my 20's style OS Stella Grand Concert guitar. A few pics:

General pic of top and B&S

Ladder bracing. I modeled after 2 of my 20's Grand Concerts. 2 differences: I added the sound hole braces as these ladder braced tops tended to potato chip; added popsicle brace.

Glueing top on my go bar deck. I use 3 ft go bars normally, but put the "box" up, and use 2 ft go bars when glueing top and back.

Will use same purflings from rosette around the guitar - that will be up next.

Thanks, the Red Spruce top does have that "Stripey" look. The White Oak Back and sides will look good under finish I think.I am going to attempt to dye it a bit darker.

20's Style OS Stella Grand Concert - Mustachio Bridge

Post by glasalle1 »

Started to Make the Mustachio Bridge for the Grand Concert.

Started with this. I enjoy making bridges, but wanted to have the slot and pin holes done in advance. Andy Birko made a bunch of blanks like this up for me. I sent him a bunch of wood blanks, ebony, Afr Blackwood, Brazilian Rosewood and Mad Rosewood

I shaped out on the band saw. I have a new/old stock Stella bridge form the 20's/30's I got from Neil Harpe, and used that as basis. I wanted a bit more rounder shape. Middle is a Hondo RW blank i used to see how I liked the shape.

Used a rasp on bridge to start to shape

Still a lot of shaping and sanding to go, but here is where I am at for now.

Thanks. Here is a better pic (although not a very good one either) that hopefully shows how the bridge will look on the guitar. Once i get the bindings/purfs done, it will start to look decent i think.

Re: Closed Box - 20's Style OS Stella Grand Concert - Bindin

Post by glasalle1 »

Hi All,

Here is the latest pic of my Stella Grand Concert guitar. Top Binding/purflings are in. I had some issues routing out the purfling channels because they were very wide, and had a few made "opportunities". You will see how we fixed these "opportunities" in a future video that we shot. John, of course, had the perfect solution on how to fix my issues!.
