warped unjoined back plates

Post by jrc127 »

I have a nice set of ribbon African Mahog. that I stored flat in my shop. The unjoined plates have slightly warped. I'm sure I can flatten them but want to make sure of the procedure. Like so?: wet them on the concave side (inside curve) and put some weight on them. Will that work?

DO NOT ADD WATER
lay them with the cup side down. If you use a cloths iron on med heat you can iron the up side and get them flat then thickness them Keep them flipped for a few weeks then brace. Even a slight warp will work out once braced.

Hah! I shall do the same with the "potato chipped" indian rosewood I bought. I was gonna get them wet, then put them under weights on the top of a cooling wood stove, once it had cooled to less than 300 degrees F.

(thanks, John)

it they are real bad you can use a cloths iron and iron them just before gluing braces. I have used that trick many times. I now have a heat blanket and treat them with med heat for about 20 min at 225 F
