Tuner post protrusion

I'm building a dread kit and glued the supplied EIR veneer to the headstock. The veneer was "nice", but I have some walnut burl laying around and decided that it would look nicer. I'm also thinking about veneering the back of the headstock. The two layers of burl on top of the rosewood veeneer will bring the total thickness up to 0.66"

I'm using Grover tuners that have a concavity on the post. Is it ok for just the concavity to be above the bushing, or does any of the straight part of the shaft (below the concavity) also have to be showing above the bushing? Perhaps it really doesn't matter since this doesn't affect the tuner to nut geometry.

Any other issues with building up the headstock too thick or veneering both sides?

You need to be sure there is enough room to get three full winds of string around the post below the hole without the string getting bound up against the bushing. This is obviously most important on the low E. That said 0.66" sounds to thick to me. A quick walk around the shop showed thickness ranging from 0.560"-0.595" on various makes of guitars.

Why not take off the EIR veneer before installing the walnut??

an iron will do wonders to help pull the veneer

I ended up removing most of it with a hand plane. After I glue on he top veneer I may bevel the edge to reveal the multiple layers. I made a sample headstock and will experiment with that first.
