Another conversion project with wood binding 45 style

Post by tippie53 »

Here is another conversion I am doing for a commission build. The customer wanted Snakewood binding and top in a 42 style. This was a lot of binding to work. With wood binding you can sometimes have gapping issues. I eliminated that with a .020 maple purfling on the side. The top is wood fiber an maple. To do the extension I make a stick of ebony , whit black pearl and black white black. It is easier to inlay this that the 7 individual pieces.
I use tite bond to glue in the pearl. I do use a poly strip to separate the purfling and hole the pearl channel open.

So you glue up the purfling and ebony before hand? Then you miter the corners?

That seems much easier than putting in each piece like I am doing now.

Sometimes the obvious eludes me!!!

Got 3 ready to go out for finish. D 45 conversion a 12 string conversion with snakewood binding. Both were old Martins that were beyond repair so we redid them. The last one is a 12 fret dred with Honduran Rosewood and Carpathian top. On the D45 I made the dark red tortoise dots for the sides like the used to have .

Did you manage to reuse all of the original wood?

Jhon very sweet. Are they new or reconditioned? New tops on existing sides?
Coud not tell from the pic are you using the straight edge to follow with a small non Bering bit for the inlay?
Thanks for the shots and info.

Fancy Schmanzy John. Dig the pkgd, esp how the tip of it nestles right into the abalone inlays. You don't usually see that on a D-45/42? The whole package is very nice...!
