Bonehead Move

Post by pryde »

So I got my bridge positioned, neck set thanks to help from the helpful folks here.

In my excitement I drilled all 6 holes through the bridge and plate which when clean and fine.

Then I realized that this will become a mess when it comes time to glue the bridge on as all the holes are going to clog up with glue, Duh.

So I guess my question is do I just re-drill the glue out again with my 3/16" bit after it dries or should I try to fill/plug the holes with something removable before gluing up the bridge?

you want to put tape on the plate under the top, this will keep the glue from pouring into the guitar. Just in case lay in some paper towel or wax paper to keep from making a mess from dripping glue .

You are going to need to ream the holes anyway to get the tapered pins to fit. That will remove any glue in the holes. I always have the E strings drilled as I use a fox style clamp.

yep, just like they said. Make sure it all lines up when the time comes to glue the bridge down....I use the fox clamp too and you can use bolts the right size through those holes to line it all up, just coat them with soap or wax. You can re-drill those holes when its all dry.

If you're really worried about it you could use these, probably around $11 with shipping:

THanks everyone. I will tape the bottom of the plate up.

I plan on bolting the E holes for alignment, then using a cauls with u-clamps to secure the rest of the bridge down and re-drill the glue out.

Speaking of taper-reaming for bridge pins, those things are pricey from stewmac, etc. I have a harbor freight tapered reamer here. Would that be acceptable? I am not sure of the degrees though?

What do others use on a budget?

The pins are either 3 or 5 degrees the HF reamer will work if it matches the pins.
