a different sort of build ...

Post by johnnparchem »

There is a real cost when one picks up wood working skills. Also realize that the tools you buy, the money spend on the shop, wood, ... may have additional cost. This year my wife designed and showed a display garden in the Seattle Flower and Garden Show. It is a large show with about 12 or so display gardens in the Washington State Convention Center. The theme of the show was Hollywood, so Barbara went with a film noir theme, edgy, angles odd shadows in a somewhat dark industrial city like scene. I ended up with the job of constructing all of the hardscape and sets.

Most of the work needs to happen before the show as one only had 2 and a half days to get the garden together and completely planted. The set was mostly built in my garage using recycled materials that Barbara found on Craig's list. This gives you the reason why the work sort of stopped on my 00. As the garden show got closer more and more of my time was spent building the pieces for the set.

She did OK winning a gold metal and the first ever X-Factor award, given by a group of Gen-X designers. The presentation of the award was cute while a group of 20 something's gave the cutting edge award to a woman who could have been their grandmother.

My favorite part was the outside black wall that we made by taking a roofers torch down torch to cedar planks, brushing off the loose char and spraying it with teak oil. It supposedly is an old Japanese technique to help protect the wood form rot and insects.

Thanks all for the kind comments. As much work as it was it was very rewarding and a lot fun. Keep that a secret from my wife as I have a whole lot of bonus husband points in the bank that I do not want discounted.
