Too Tall Bindings!
Too Tall Bindings!
Hi All,
OK, quick story then a plea…
I found some nice laminated bindings from a luthier in the Bay area. They are black walnut with a maple strip. I thought they would look good on my Koa wood project. I bent one piece for a test which seemed to work ok. Having five pieces to work with I routed the guitar for the bindings. Unfortunately 2 pieces broke . Here’s the rub, these pieces are .32 “ tall and obviously the routed channels are too! I can’t find the luthier to get more , so I need to find someone who will make some .32” bindings. Any ideas? Please

Re: Too Tall Bindings!
Woody, what is the height of the walnut excluding the purfling? I assume when you say .32" that includes the purfling laminates? Also, what is the height of your maple and of your walnut purfling? I could make you a couple new walnut pieces, but I couldn't guarantee the walnut would match what you have. Do you have the purfling pins you could add to the walnut or would you need those made up as well?Woody OKeefe wrote:Ken,

Woody, are you sure you can't make your own binding? do you have a table saw? take your router off your jig and rig up a makeshift router table if you don't already have one.
Re: Too Tall Bindings!
Hi Martin,
No Table saw, no room , no budget, but I did get John Hall to make and bend some for me.

Here's a picture of the installed bindings John Hall made for me. They are Bubinga and I like them with the Koa wood.
Thanks John

Woody,
Nice save there with the bindings from John. I like Bubinga and Koa together. I am probably going to do a Bubinga fretboard and bridge on the all koa ukulele I am going to be building for my cousin. Hana Lima has a Bubinga kit that includes everything you need to make a uke except for the top, back and sides. So the ukulele guts I guess.
The guitar is looking good. Dont stop now, we need some new pics in the "Show It Off" Thread!
