Hide Glue Mix

Is anyone using the Behlen hide glue from SMc ?

I mix a trial batch using equal weights of water and granules which equates to about en egg cup full of granules and 80% egg cup of water.

It looked a bit thick to me and easily skinned over after about an hour in the glue pot

How quickly the glue is skinning over is relative to the gram strength of your hide glue. Have a look at this URL for some expert advice.

Not all hide glue is the same. I find the best hide glue from Tools for working wood. they have different strengths. I find the quality about the best there is.

I use the Behlen's in a 1:1 mix with water. That gives me a gel after it sits at room temp for a few hours but thins to Log Cabin syrup consistency when it gets hot. One thing that really helps me is to mix up a few ounces in a ~6oz plastic squeeze bottle and heat it in a hot water bath (I use a baby bottle warmer). It makes application go very fast, even and neat vs back and forth with a brush. After the project is finished the leftover glue is tossed.

Any advice on the hold-heet pot use would be appreciated as guidance is misleading as follows

DO NOT PLACE WATER IN THE HEATER SHELL

NO WATER IS REQUIRED IN THE JACKET

PLACE WATER AND GLUE IN REMOVABLE CHAMBER

I did some tests and I wasn't happy, after about 9 hours of cure time I could easily pull a test piece of spruce from a block of Mahogany

How long does hide glue take to cure ?

Duke does like the taste of it though
