Worked some over the weekend but not much as I had Strep and didn't feel well.

Started tuning the braces on my top and back. Mainly focused on things I knew I wanted to do and would take down the last little bit after doing Chladni patterns and measuring frequencies etc. Both neck blocks are glued to the rims now so I need to start focusing on the lining.

Cuban Hog/Lutz 00: Eat Your Heart Out Somogyi....<smile>

Post by Darryl Young »

Remember Somogyi's YouTube video where he strikes his "tuned" Brazilian Rosewood back with a special striker and it rings like a gong?

Well, I'm not Somogyi.......and this isn't Brazilian Rosewood (Cuban Mahogany)........and I don't have a high dollar recording device (IPhone using SoundCloud free app).......nor a high dollar mic (built-in mic on my I-Phone) and I don't have a fancy striker (used my fingers)..........and this is only a 00 sized soundboard.........but this ain't bad!

Here is a recording of what the back on my 00 build sounds like when tapped (after the initial rough tuning of the back braces)...........

http://soundcloud.com/adaboy-1/sounds-f ... -1/s-0QbS6

PS Use good speakers on your PC and turn up the volume. It actually sounds better than this and rings longer......but it's hard to hold in the right place, tap, and hold the phone for recording at the same time <smile>.

PSS I'm a giving type of guy.........so when I'm finished, I'll let this guitar go for only $25K......cheaper than Somogyi........

I hope everyone knows I was kidding around on the last post. I expected to be given a hard time about that......

Tonight I thinned the strips I'll use to make solid linings and bent them on my bender. I showed a picture of them earlier in the thread. Be interesting to see how easy these are to make.

I have a bunch of PC recording software and hardware I had bought to record my son for singing auditions, that I am planning to use for sampling and analyzing tones. The software is nice as I can process the sample with a discrete fourier transform and examine the tap in the frequency domain. Even though I read Trevors book I am not sure what I will do with this information as I do not think my skill level calls for this level of fine tuning. But as an engineer I will find the study interesting.

I will be interested in hearing what you are doing as you go on. You tend to research things way more than I do. :)

Thinned the Ash strips I'm using to create solid linings down to 0.070" as I'm using 3 strips to form the lining. Last night I removed them from the bender, trimmed them to length, and glued them together. I clamped them to the rim and used it as the mold to shape the linings while the glue cures. Note I didn't glue the solid linings to the rim (I have wax paper between the linings and the rim) so after I remove the linings, clean them up, and trim the ends nice and square, I'll have to repeat this process to glue the solid linings to the rim. Here is a picture but you can't see the linigs very well.

Removed the solid linings tonight and cleaned them up. Sent them through my drum sander to cleanup the edges and hand sanded the inside and outside surfaces.

I've never made these before so I was curious how they would turn out but I think they look fine. Here is a couple of pictures before I glued them to the sides tonight. Note each lining is made up of 3 strips of Ash and each strip is 0.070" thick and 3/4" wide (before sanding).

The linings look great. Great idea running them through the drum sander.

Yeah Darryl, these lining turned out really nice. I've been wanting to try some solid formed linings, and this looks like a great procedure to use. I think I can do this with the Luan mahogany I have rather than trying to make kerfed lining out of it.

What advantages do the solid linings have over kerfed linings or vice versa?
