Oh you mean that's just the micro-mesh? I thought that was with a couple coats of tru oil. You could almost leave it like that.

Yes, just the micro-mesh. No tru-oil finish yet. Actually, I went through all the steps of the miro-mesh, which I started after 600 grit wet/dry, in about an hour, but just for the back. It was a pleasure to see the mirror image gradually appear over steps, and not that much pressure was needed when sanding.hummingbird wrote:Oh you mean that's just the micro-mesh? I really dislike sanding up to about 320 grit though, as the dust bothers me even wearing a mask. But with the micro-mesh the dust just seems to collect on the mesh until brushed out and not much gets in the air. Well, not much wood is coming off in those later grits anyway.

my arm hurts just thinking about that!
Do you anticipate any adhesion problems with the tru-oil with that much sheen on the wood?
Jim: I believe I read somewhere on this forum that there is no adhesion issue with tru-oil.

Re: tru-oil, again
I recently bought Jonathan Kinkead's book "Build Your Own Acoustic Guitar" and I can't seem to find where it says that he sands to 12,000 grit before finishing with Tru Oil. He says sand with 3,000 and up afterwards. Can anyone tell me what page that is on??
Thanks
Thanks

I really just sanded to 12,000 out of curiosity. After about 1000 it really did not require that much extra work for just doing the back. So, I have no reason to believe it is needed.
I am now curious about what KinKead says. I now have 12 coats of tru-oil on and am done with that. After curing, does he recommend sanding (lightly I presume) from 3000 upward for polishing? Any more details you can provide about his method would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Re: tru-oil, again
Hello all,
Here’s the back after tru-oil finish. If you compare these to the pictures after fine sanding that I posted earlier on this thread, you can see that the tru-oil dramatically changed the color, as all finishes do I guess... The lighting conditions were the same for the before and after photos.
I like the color and the “warm glow” on the rosewood. It has what I guess you guys would call an open pore look, maybe because I didn’t do enough sanding with tru-oil at 180 grit. Still, I think it came out okay and I am happy with this choice of finish so far.
Cheers,
Tim

Gorgeous, I love that look. Nothing "plasticky" about it, just beautiful wood.

Thanks Dave. I followed your video procedures very closely. I'm quite happy with it.

I need to post the pore filling vid.
