in the simplest terms possible, what does opening or tightening the x angle accomplish? references to young's modulus and dipoles of any kind will be ignored. I'm feeling right brained at the moment. :)
for example... tighten the xbrace = more resistance to the pull of the strings, so you can brace lighter
open the xbrace for a looser top, maybe more responsive?
Lets say we leave a top thick, brace light, and tighten the x. is the assembled unit able to resist the same stress as the average top thickness, bracing, and x angle?
I understand it's not so simple but you get the point.

Wider angle allows the bridge to rotate more -- as does moving the x intersection closer to the sound hole --- pre-war "D" have both these features --- and the common structural failures as well.
