Dave,
Try a search of Rick Turner I recall when he was a regular contributor to frets.com a few articles and gadgets he published showing tension/torsion effects and counter measures he devised -- if memory serves I took it all with a grain of salt.

It was the addition of the Popsicle brace that they hoped to control this splitting after thinning the neck block . Also they changed the traverse brace from 3/8 by 3/4 to 1/2 by 5/8 . Not all changes were for the better .

I'll look it up from Rick Turner, but I've got to believe that what is commonly accepted at this time is probably the best overall approach and that is what I will do.
