All the pix that I have been able to find show the lower limit of a cutaway to be just above the thick soundhole brace.
That should tell me something, I guess. But I think I have seen, somewhere on this Forum, pix of guitars where the cutaway falls below that brace, and the brace is shortened and inlet into the kerfing on the actual cutaway.
Recommendations please! What considerations should I, uh..consider, when designing a cutaway?
Thanks
Edit - okay now I found a few pix of a lower cutaway. Still would like recommendations though!
Cutaway limits
Re: Cutaway limits
There's some really severe cutaway's out there Breedlove comes to mind. Here's my thoughts and I truly know nothing for sure. My concern is reducing the interior volume --- so if I were to add a cutaway to a particular model, (the assumption is that I like the way that guitar sounded) --- I would increase the body depth to compensate for the cutaway section.
Re: Cutaway limits
That makes sense.
If someone were building, say, a Ditson dred, and wanted a little more access to the upper frets, then a little volume would have to be sacrificed for the sake of a cutaway unless the body depth was increased.
Thanks.

Re: Cutaway limits
Dave,
That would have been on my Macauaba Cutaway dred.....not done that way for any reason other than I liked how the cutaway looked, and I don't think there is going to be any structural issues either way you do it.

Okay, that was you Kevin. That was nice work, and I was looking for the thread that showed the insides. I can probably find it now.
Thanks
