Where was that post........

Post by Darryl Young »

Not too long ago someone posted a neat way they join tops/backs that was quick and easy. I'll probably use the tape method but I wanted to re-visit that post......but I can't find it. Anyone recall where it was posted or who posted it?

Thanks!!!

Darryl,

I don't know if this is what you were looking for, but it is about jointing tops/backs.

Thanks Sean. That isn't the one I was looking for but I appreciate you trying to help.

Seems the topic of this thread wasn't about joining but a nice simple method was shown. Maybe it was a method to do something else and I thought I could use the same technique to join a plate, not sure.

I watched Chris Paulick's video last night before making this post!

I also watched John's video (I guess the same one he is referring to). Only thing is that I can't use CA with mahogany like John uses on the rosewood in his video. I like the way Chris props up one half of the back with a 2x4 before taping so the tape is stretched and pulls the back halves together when the back is flattened.

Can I use CA on the claro walnut backs I need to join or should I stick with my fish glue? I'm leaning toward the fish glue.

BTW, to level the joining edge on Cuban mahogany I unrolled a strip of 2" wide sandpaper parallel with the miter slot on the flat, cast iron portion of my table saw. Then I slid the fence over the sandpaper and locked it in place and held the back halves flat against the fence while sliding back and forth over the sandpaper and it leveled the joint. That's about as quick and easy a method as I could think of. Might be more effort on a harder wood like rosewood, not sure.

I read a tip elsewhere with regards to sanding a jointed edge.

Be sure to clean any dust or sanding residue off of the edge before you glue it up. A quick wipe down with naptha or similar solvent might be in order. Also, depending on the grit of the paper you use, the sanded edges might benefit from a quick swipe with 220 or 320 grit just to make sure there are no deep sanding scratches or ridges.

I think the post I'm referring to was about binding a fingerboard. Somehow the binding was "wedged" against the sides of the fingerboard and I thought the same technique would also work for gluing the halves of tops and backs together. It was a simple and effective technique which made me think of using it for joining plates.

Does that ring a bell for anyone?

I use it on African Mahogany and haven't had any problems yet (3 or 4 times).
