One month Ditson
Re: One month Ditson
Hi Mark - the Ditz is 25.4" scale.
I would like to hear a great old Martin someday. I've played some of the 70's-90's Martins but not one of the oldies.

IMHO, it's a life altering moment when you pick up a vintage martin that has "the sound". Thats what happened when I played this 1929 Ditson 111.deadedith wrote: I would like to hear a great old Martin someday. I've played some of the 70's-90's Martins but not one of the oldies.

]Also, just curious why this kit is called a Ditson, it reminds me more of the original D-2's which were the predecessors to the D-28. They had rosewood back and sides and were 12 fret models like the ditsons but the ditsons only came in mahogany, and only 2 of the 3 styles of full size ditson dreads were made all with hog. I have no life...

Its called a Diston because the Ditson Dreadnought was originally manufactured by Martin starting in 1916 for the Oliver Ditson Company of Boston (a publishing company) who in turn sold the guitar under their own name until some time in the late 1920s when the Oliver Ditson Company closed its doors. The D-1 and D-2 Dreadnoughts came out in the early 1930s.

I'm well aware of what the ditson is, as you can see in my previous post I have played an original and know the history well. This guitar looks like a D-2 much more than a ditson because of the materials used and the general styling, thus my question of why this particular kit is called a ditson.

One can Purchase a J200 Gibson that has one of at least 4 four different brace designs -- made of Maple or Rosewood, or even like the one Elvis used which has a three piece back -- just the same they are all J-200's. As stated above the Ditson "D"'s are generally associated (credited) for the 12th fret neck, slotted peg-head and round shoulder characteristics. So it is safe to say there is more common knowledge of the Ditson "D"'s as opposed to the 7 D-1's and the 2 D-2 experimentals produced by Martin.

Re: One month Ditson
Dave, nice looking guitar. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Re: One month Ditson
Here's the situation: I have lightly sanded the body to 180, and put a wash coat of tru oil on it, just for protection.
The instrument was paid for by a woman my wife works with; she happens to be an outstanding artist, and since her dad had just passed away, and she had gotten a little money from his estate, she wanted a commemorative instrument that she could pass on as well. She's only 30, so I assume it will be a while. :-) She will get the guitar tomorrow for about 1 week.
So, I have not finished the top at all since I believe she is, along one of the borders, going to do something artistic and memorializing. The instrument is also going to be played a lot, however. I try to follow the 'the way you do anything is the way you do everything' philosophy and, no matter what the use of the instrument will turn out to be, it's got to be the best I can do.
She will do her thing in a week or less then return it to me for the finish work, touch-ups, set-up etc. I'll post again at that time, and if we have sound clip capability at KGF, post a clip or two.
The neck cap is being glued on now; I'll put it together and get out a pic before it leaves tomorrow morning.
