Dave, what scale are you using?
I was recently in Eugene, Oregon, where I made a pilgrimage to McKenzie River Music. Those guys are Martin freaks. The owner has a nice collection of martins that were made "in the day," and there are many vintage martins hanging on the wall in his shop. I had the amazing experience of hearing a '41 D18 played right next to a recently made D18. Egad! that '41 makes the room light up!
Anyhoo, we discussed guitars for quite a while (without a single pun, btw) and one point he made was about scale length. I had associated scale length with "frets free of the body," and he told me not to do that. He said that you can have 12 frets free and use a long scale or whatever. So, Dave, you have 12 free on your Ditz... what scale does it use?
