To qualify my answer, I've never stained a guitar finish (on purpose)!
That said, I believe these colortone dyes that stewmac sells can be applied in various ways, can be diluted with water or alcohol, and can be mixed/blended to get whatever color you are looking for.

looks like an "amber" stain to me. I've used the Colortone Amber w/good results. you water it down, apply to scrap wood until you get the desired color.

Most likely that is not a stain rather a tinted top coat -- Taylor uses UV cure polyester. Behlens sells a good assortment of colors in their rattle can tinted lacquer -- I really like the stuff - it goes on nice and even, of course the value changes with each additional coat so you have to make a complete sample board to make sure you'd get the desire results. Apply stain directly to figure maple can have some very unusual and unwanted results --- no matter the "coloration" method a sample board is a requirement. Give Taylor a call or send an email I've always found their staff very helpful.

Oh yeah -- in an actual Minwax Stain the color is "Colonial Maple" a very popular choice when we were supplying furniture accessories.

Thanks Ken...I didn't know that about applying stain to figured maple. I also didn't know about the tinted lacquer. Pretty cool! I'm going to call Taylor and ask them about that particular finish. What exactly can happen when applying stain to figured maple? Thanks. BTW, I sent you an email this afternoon.kencierp wrote:Most likely that is not a stain rather a tinted top coat -- Taylor uses UV cure polyester. I would bet is a couple of clear coats, with 3-4 coats of Stew Macs Vintage Amber, then more clear. Nice look, beautiful wood.

Well, it's a Taylor, which means that specific guitar is finished with whatever light cured UV system they were using at the time that guitar was built.
I'm sure the color can be duplicated. You just need to get a sample of your wood and start testing...
