SOunds great Dan, keep us up tp date. I always wanted to try building a violin, but would have no idea what to do with it if I did. Couldn't even tune it....but it'll be fun watching this build.

So I got the blocks all finished on my violin, and as we speak I am waiting for hot hide glue to heat up to glue the blocks to the mold.

Here's a few pictures: The mold with blocks set in "mock up", my entire set of wood for my violin, and a sample of the flame on my back.

Enjoy.

Alright, so tonight made some pretty huge progress on the violin. I also picked up a cheap powershot digital camera at the pawn shop so that I can keep track with pictures of my builds for anyone interested. When I get time I'm going to update my blogspot website to you can track my builds with more details.

Anyhow today I got the C bouts bent and glued, and bent the ribs of the upper and lower bout of the violin in a nutshell. Here's several pictures to summarize my night. I'll post tomorrow with Cello progress.

Image
So here's an overview of the c bouts sized and ready to bend, notice the inside of the c-bouts the block has been shaped for the curve and is ready to go. The ribs need to be flattened on the bottom yet, and cut to height.

Image
The C bout ribs are sized to length and just oversized a fraction of a mm over the size of the blocks.

Image
Upper and lower bout ribs need to be perfectly flattened on the bottom before cutting height down, so I checked for light on the flat plate, which shows some with out my hand there because the ribs bowed with out being held straight.

Once ribs bottoms have been flattened, I set everything on the flat plate to use the tallest block of that section for the rib to trace the height into it.

Image
Progress at the end of the night, Cbouts clamped in and glued, upper and lower bouts bent. I'll need to touch them up next time to true them back up as they sprung a bit out of shape. I'll have to do some work on shaping the corners for these ribs and beveling the ends of the c bouts before they can be glued in.

Just showing a bit of the flame in the sides.

Feels like I got quite a bit done tonight, I'm hoping I feel half as successful on the cello tomorrow night.

Cbout bending jig didn't seem to show up. I'll try the link once more.

Whelp, I've been slacking on the cello progress. This post was made for the cello, but I hadn't gotten around to putting anything up. Lately the cello has fallen down the priority list a bit, and I've been crazy busy. For anyone who wants to keep track of all details I post check out http://dbomblissviolin.blogspot.com/

Anyhow, from the beginning I've resawed the sides from a block of poplars, thicknessed them, bent them and started gluing them. Sounds easier than it ended up being.

I'm a littler further than these pictures show, but here's what I can post as a teaser:
