I can't take credit for the origin, (don't tell anybody, but I saw John Hall do it). It's one of those forehead smackers, Like you said, duh.

I see now that this device is pretty common and found often on the Internet --- Jim, thanks for introducing the idea to the forum. Here's my version, all surfaces are covered with clear plastic packaging tape so nothing will stick to it even CA.

You are missing one point The fence area or rail should be low enough so you can do your fretting in this jig. Also on the end you want a small block so you can use a wedge to clamp off that part of the binding .
If you are using plastic binding , you start at the sound hole side , heat the binding to bend it , and work around the corner.
Pic will follow as soon as camera arrives

Personally I would not do fretting in this fixture I'd use my normal rock solid fretting station. But that's just me.

if you do wood binding you will be fine , platic you will knock it loose and the fixture wedges the board tight so you can fret without fear of bounce .
I agree Ken that you need a firm footing for hammer fretting

With a wide blank, cut the binding strips from the blank using a thin kerf saw,THEN cut the fret slots.

Yeah, I forgot the part about laying a piece of wax-paper over the jig before you insert the fretboard.
