What is this thing? Stewmac OM plans.

Post by ColestineGuitar »

I have highlighted a part that is drawn onto the Stewmac OM plans. It is not ever called out or named in the plans, and I wonder if it is part of a two-part neck block. Is it just a block that accommodates the radiused top?

I also have the Stewmac 000 plans, and it is not shown there. Cumpiano (the Big C) does not mention such an appendage.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the function, name, necessity, of this thingy?

The Martin kits have a neck block with an extension on it cut froma solid block. THis looks like a neck block with an extension gloed on to it....this is to help support the fingerboard extension. I don't build with them anymore....haven't noticed a difference.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

Ahah! That makes perfect sense. I think I will omit the thing as well and go with a one piece neck block such as most people use.

The martin cantilever is actually glued on to the neck block .

Looks like a Flux Capacitor to me. Only Doc Brown or Marty McFly can help you with that.

Interesting...in my jumbo kit it was cut from a single block. I'll have to look back at photos of the build and try to confirm that.

I'm going with the flux capacitor idea.

But thanks for the other, less practical advice from the rest of you. "Martin Cantilever" is what it's called, eh?

I knew from your first post that you were a smart man. You just confirmed it.

Here's a pic (down a bit on the screen) of what I've seen from the Martin factory -- its would seem to me that the grain has to be oriented as seen in the picture to meet the goal of the designed integrity.
