Yeah, I can just about comprehend scanning, say, a regular crescent wrench and getting a good result. But moving up to something as simple as a pair of pliers? It seems to me a 3D x-ray scanner or equivalent would be necessary, and a few terrabytes of computing power?
Taking the pliers apart first would be lots easier.
Can we apply this to luthiery? Science fiction?
