I just finished retopping a classical guitar that had been dropped. The Ziricote sides were in ok shape but cracked. The top bindings were also damaged. Ultimately I put a new top on, routed out the top bindings and reinstalled. I also repaired all of the cracks in the sides. The back is clean
I tested the finish, alcohol does nothing acetone softens the finish on the sides.
My question is it: to achieve an even look to the sides should I sand it back to the wood and refinish, or can I sand it enough to clean up the finish and respray a few coats of clear nitro, or apply a few wash coats of shellac and then spray some clear coats of nitro.
or of course any other wiser suggestions.
Major repair of nitro finished classical.

I would sand back lightly and build back up with Nitro. I wouldn't use shellac as long as you don't hit wood.

I agree with John.
You never know what you are capable of until you actually try....
