It never occurred to me to check binding on the nut slot by pushing down on the string north of the nut.
One minor note: since the tape on the fingerboard was removed before the new slots were marked and cut, it didn't seem to make sense to mark their positions as you did when removing the strings. But I guess the marks helped when you were carving out the seats for the splice-ins, so you could be sure that they were centered.
