Cutaway side templating

Post by watergunn »

Hi all.

I will be bending the sides for a cutaway for the first time. I have the templates used for laying out a standard guitar side set for OMs and dreadnoughts.
Is there something I will need to do differently for a cutaway side set as far as laying it out to get the correct lengths and widths for the cutaway section?
Also, is there a trick to cutting the neck block correctly?
On the last cutaway I built I ended up with the side protruding about 3/32 out from under the fretboard. So, I obviously cut the block to big width wise.
Thanks for any advice.

The side blank profile is different on a cutaway. There will be about a 1/4 in rise from the waist to the fall in at the neck block. If you profile them as a standard you will lose about 3/16 or more at the neck.

Is there actually a plan template that would have that on it that you know of?

Happy to pay for a paper tracing if anyone has one.

Thanks RG

You can take construction paper, and tape it around the guitar, flush to the top (because the top is flat) and trace the edge of a cutway with a pencil onto the paper. Then when you pull the paper off, you have a pretty nice profile template tracing, that will work for roughing into your side prior to bending.

If you have an OMC you can copy, that works great, and just takes a few minutes.
