A very close call..............

Post by Kevin Sjostrand »

So on my 7th guitar, after six times successfully using the trim bit in my hand held router to trim back the back and top after gluing them to the rims, I had an OH OH! After the fact I see that I should have been going the other direction of travel with the router at that exact spot......careless!
I am lucky. The chip out falls within my planned binding/purfling width of .210". It could have been a huge disaster!
I will pass this on to say "be every so careful when you are doing this procedure". I was only taking about a 3/16" bite into the top edge here, but it was too much. This procedure always makes me nervous.....now I know why!!!

we all had this happen from one time or another . When it happens it can be a design enhancement opportunity.

John, in your experience, should I fill that tear out before I rout for the purfling? Any change that bit is going to grab a rough edge and tear some more?

As long as there is not a crack in the spruce there should be no need to fill anything.

No crack, it just chipped out. Just leary that the bit might grab it when cutting the purfling channel. Never had to deal with this before as I said.

I think if you make sure your bit is super sharp and rout down hill you'll be fine.

Thanks Tim, I'm sure you are right. I now see that I did not come down far enough from the center of the bout when I was coming down the side......not paying attention!!

As Ben suggested, make sure your bit isn't dull.

New bit, only for tops and only used twice so far.
