sound port report

Post by Tim R »

All,

I just cut an oval sound hole about the size of an egg on the outside curve of the upper bout of my 000 12-fret, following McKnight's approach. Wow! Not just louder to me while playing but better, fuller sounding. My daughter, who is more musical than I, walked in and spontaneously commented on how good it sounded. She says she can hear the richer sound as well. Really fascinating. I'm hooked.

Tim - you did this on a completed guitar? Can you direct me to McKnight's method?

Dave,

here he discusses the effect/evidence:

Here he describes his technique. Scroll down to the post by mcknight:

I cut it into my one and only finished kit guitar. Took a couple of hours to cut, sand, and clean it up. I need to refinish the area now with a few coats of Tru-oil, but as you know refinishing is easy with Tru-oil!.

My oval is not perfect, but that's only true if you look at it too closely :)
