SoundCloud audio clip posting

Post by Jim_H »

So I stumbled on this website the other day, and found it's a good option for having a convenient place to host sound clips to share your work with us =)

http://soundcloud.com/

It's free up to 120 minutes of recordings, which should be plenty. If you have a microphone on your computer, you can record directly to the site, or you can upload MP3's you record yourself. There is also a "SoundCloud" app for iPhone and Android that will let you record and upload directly from your phone.

Once you get your recordings on the site you can share them in various ways, and if you are into facebook and twitter and such, you can integrate into those social media outlets as well.

If you have a blog, you might be able to 'embed' the player into your blog site as well. I didn't try this...

I played around with it a bit last night. These recordings were made directly on my Android SmartPhone using their SoundCloud app. The quality isn't as good as recording into dedicated equipment, just because the microphone in my phone is not designed for this type of recording. It is good enough to hear some of the differences between two different but similar guitars, but if you want good recording quality you'll want to use better equipment to make your MP3's before you upload them.

Here is a link to one of the recordings I made on my phone.

No more excuses for not having audio clips of your instruments :p

BTW, please excuse the poor playing. These were just meant to be tests of the process.

So, I played around with this a little more tonight.

Here is another sample I recorded using Audacity (FREE!) on my old windows laptop with a "Blue Yeti" USB microphone (about $90 at Amazon).

This one is obviously better quality using the mic, but it still could be better. The volume is a bit too high because I suck at mastering. :p

I'm going to experiment with trying different guitars and different types of guitars and do some A-B evaluations.

Really nice sounding guitar Jim!

And i agree sound cloud is a really great resource for you guys that build and sell - easy to embed in blogs and forums and social networking sites. And you can add comments at specific points in a track, if you wanted to point out certain characteristics. Plus, its another way to network - lots of good singer songwriters and folkies on there. Just don't get overwhelmed with those pesky kids and their boom boom music...

Audacity is a very good program.
I think in the future we should give the info re: any reverb or eq used, and compression etc just so we know what we are listening to.
This is not directed at you Jim!!! That is a good sounding instrument.

Wow, I didn't even know about the groups and such.. that could be fun =)

I made a group called "Kit Guitar Forums", but I don't see how to add people... Maybe you have to join on your own?
