they are 6 in wide outside to outside. Solid patterns are not needed the steel slats work with the outside. You can make them solid but you soon find out you have a lot of heavy patterns and storing them is a problem.
Also the open pattern allows for a faster heat up and cool down. they absorb heat. They also add to the cost
