Great trick, but almost as easy with a regular old caliper with fine points and a screw adjuster. Make a guess at the 1/5th spacing between the two E's. "Walk" the caliper across the nut from one E to the other. If the space is too big, make the caliper smaller, if it is too small, make it bigger. Mark your spots with a fine lead pencil. I find I can hit it right on after about 3-4 trials, and the whole thing takes about a minute.

This means, of course, that you are not getting equal spaces, but rather equal spacing.
