Pore Filling -- SO SIMPLE EVEN A CAVEMAN CAN DO IT!!

Hey David,
Well I choose to use Devcon, hardware store epoxy. I figured "How different could it be from the HIGh DOLLAR stuff.
Putting it on went fine. I DID sand it back to bare wood, and all the pores appeared to be filled. I used this on Palo Escrito, Cocobolo, and mahogany. I used lacquer sealer over the epoxy filled surface, and sprayed DEFT rattle cans. The finish appeared to be wonderful once buffed out. A few months later, in isolated areas on all 3 guitars I have some little, what looks like tiny bubbles or pin holes at the surface of the finish. That is the best way for me to describe what it looks like. Not over the whole surface, but in some areas, on both the rosewoods and the mahogany.
So on my last guitar, I didn't use pore filler at all, just applied the vinyl sealer and sanded back to fill the pores.
In retrospect, I am thinking the "fracturing" of the finish on this guitar may be TOO MUCH sealer on the guitar.
Thus, I am thrilled to try this lacquer based grain filler. I will still use the Behlens products over the top, but I will only spray one coat of the vinyl sealer.

Three coats on average -- it drys so fast and is so easy to apply a couple of extra coat is no big deal.

I like the fact that the compatibility is posted right in the advertisement and it appears you can use just about anything as a top coat.

I've communicted with the owner on numerous occassions, Erick has been in the business many, many years and he really knows his stuff.

This is really pretty exciting stuff. I've been using System 3 epoxy and while I like the results I hate putting the stuff on. Guess I'll have to try this. Thanks.

I do realize you brushed on the lacquer based product. I read the info on the website, and it stated you should use a retarder when brushing....I was thinking i would rather spray it, then I wouldn't have to purchase a retarder, but I am not equipped to safely spray lacquer, though I could spray the waterbased....thats where the comment came from. Sorry for the confusion.

I have some of the Colortone waterbased pore filler from Stewmac, and will use it on some tighter-grained woods like the macacuba. I also have a bunch of epoxy and silica left, which I have grown quite comfortable with. I will try this when I run out of both.....money is always tight these days, and I need to make do with what I have. Thanks for showing it to us!

I think if you were brushing it on a large table top or wall panel the retarder might be require, but on something as small as a guitar its not necessry -- you can brush the back in a few minutes, same with the side.

I don't need to buy retarder. I just dip my finger in the stuff and it is thoroughly retarded.

Ken, you mentioned (in the opening post of this thread) the incompatibility of this pore filler with Deft sanding sealer, is the same true with Deft rattle can lacquer top coat?

When talking compatibility you have the terms "on top of a product" and "under a product." So with the Hood lacquer base pore filler you do not want to put it on top of "sanding sealer" that contain sterates (soap) actually that would include just about all "sanding sealer" including Deft.

It seems based on the advertisement, you can put just about any coating "on top of" the Hood lacquer based filler.

Thanks for clarifying that for me Ken, since that's the case I might just give it a whirl, I'm really stuck on wanting to use "clear" fillers, I know that is pretty single-minded and closed-minded but that's just where I'm at right now. The reason I questioned it's compatibility with Deft is because all of the local hardware stores and home improvement centers around here stock it so I have quick, easy accessibility to it.
