It makes the pegs turn smoother and hold better. I know it seems like opposites but it does seem to work.

Are the end pin pegs never glued in place?

I would think you can do that unless you plan to add a pick up in the future. I would prefer a screw in type because I am screwy!

Never glue in the strap pin. That should be pulled when you travel with the guitar. You havn't lived till you see your guitar split from tail to neck . That pin is a wedge and when dropped will split a guitar like firewood
