Red Padauk Classical

A while back I asked about red padauk as a tonewood, well here is my build so far.

Top Braced, a bit more brace shaping needed.

Detail of rosette, a bit of tearout at 10 o clock position. I had problems as the rosette was not completely round and I made the channel a bit wide and used a bit of white plastic purfling to fill the gap.

The wood has some really large pores which will take a lot of filling. It is like rosewood to work with but the red dust gets every where and easily stains the spruce top. I have used shellac to protect the top from the dust.

That is really looking nice! Beautiful rosette. Padauk is very much like Rosewood in workability and in tone, so it should sound quite nice. It is a pain as far as dust is concerned...be especially careful wiping it down with naptha or anything like that. Don't let anything touch the top that has already touched the back or sides. Sealing the top is a great idea. Vacuum the back and sides often with a soft brush attachment as well, helps to keep the dust off of everything. Keep it up.

Mike,
You are doing a super job on this one. I have thought I'd like to use Padauk but don't know if I want to contend with the red dust.
I was expecting bloodwood to be a problem, but so far on my current build it has not been.
Have you found the Padauk easy to work with?

Despite the red dust, I love working with the stuff. I have three more with padauk started, and hope I keep at least one of them.

when I use this or bloodwood , it looks like I am working at a paprika factory

It certainly is a reasonably priced tonewood, and I like the color on the classical especially.

Looking good! Need more info on that rosette. Where is it from if you didnt make it? Did you route the channel for it?
