My #4, a BRW and Adi spruce OM

With all this talk about rosettes and duco and such in other threads, I thought I'd add more. This is a red spruce top I bought from LMI. I also bought purflings from them in the same order, and I thought I was getting all plastic, but one of them, the WBW thicker inner one, was wood. So I put together something that is kinda Martin-ish and I thought that using the wood inner rings might make it look a little different than a Martin. I don't know if they sent me something that was different from what I specified or if I miscalculated the width of the purflings and the channel. Probably the latter. But I began to really like the look of the wood with the white plastic, so I just slowly scraped material off of each side of the wood purfling with a razor blade, and checked it constantly with a caliper, until I got a good fit. I don't expect that what I just wrote makes any sense. So here it is. I used duco cement.

I think it looks great! What are the outer rings?

thanks, they're black plastic. I was going for an old OM-18 kind of a look.

wow, they look more brown than black. not being critical - i like it better than the black plastic look. Will you do a matching top purling 'stack'?

it's going to have rosewood binding, then inside of that, a purfling thing that will be ivoroid-black-white-black.

the ivoroid with be thicker than the BWB.

gee, it seems to me that those looks worse. anyhow, here also is an OM mold I made yesterday, and the sides trimmed to fit into the mold. the second guitar was tons better than the first. and the third was better than the second. and now this is my fourth. i'm so excited...







here's the ribbon i'm using for the sides. it has some cotton in it and a cool texture. it isn't 100% polyester like the ribbon that Wayne Henderson uses.

#4 is for this neighborhood guy that was a friend of a friend. but i guess now we are friends, too. he so far has been the perfect guy to build something for: he completely stays out of the way. i told him i might have it done in march and it is seeming like that's when he's planning to next check in on me.

Nice rosette and mold! Having just completed my first rosette as well I can share in the euphoria. Your mold looks very similar to the one I've made (but haven't used quite yet.) What's the depth on yours? What did you use for spacers?

thanks! i used 1/2" plywood with some scrap pieces of wood in-between them. the depth is about 2 3/4" but i'll put smaller pieces of scrap on top and bottom to center the mold on the sides. i haven't yet made the spreaders. i was thinking at first of making those out of the cutouts from the mold, but it might be handy to have those guitar shapes cut out for something. i have an extra piece of 1/2" plywood that i'll probably make them out of. i have several hardware spreader things that i can use.
