Was the neck block already glued to the sides before you screwed it to the mold? If so, are you trying to prevent the sides/block from sliding up/down in the mold?

yes to both
I do set the block in first to drill the hole , then glue to the sides and with the hole predrilled it help to relocate the block to center.

We've been doing this since we started building guitars....... but we go one step further and drill the tail block as well. We actuall do this all when we have the blocks glued to the rims....... prior to kerfing etc. Steel string guitars.....at least all that we do have a tail pin. Simply again put a screw in the tail end and go all the way through the tail block as well....... makes a great pilot hole for the tail pin. I'd advise against using drywall screws..... they will break fairly easy...... go with a good square head drive steel screw and use the ones with the flange made to the screw.

Blessings,

If the block is glued why do you need the screw?
Thanks, Ace

the screw locks it into the mold till you get the guitar glued up. If there is one thing you don't want is a neck block move before the top and back are glued on. The side will allow the neck block to float and the screw locks in it.

I followed John's procedure and it worked great. It made it easy to install the dovetail neck.
