Looking really good!
On the necks I've been just wiping on 2 or 3 coats of shellac and steel wooling it smooth. Seals the wood, is nice and smooth and gives some protection helping to keep "dirt" from getting into the wood.

Life has intervened a bit,. which has slowed progress. I've gotten some things done though. Gluing on the neck with HHG went very well. All the alignments and angles came out as expected, which was quite satisfying (and a huge relief).
i added the tailpiece (probably not called that on a violin, but you know what I mean) and chin rest. The chin rest clamps onto the violin body with two turnbuckle-style clamps. A loop on the tailpiece slips over the end pin and presses on a small block of ebony called the tailgut saddle that is inset into the top edge of the violin.
With the tailpiece in place and the neck attached, I could think about stringing it up!
Well, not quite. The bridge had to be addressed first.

Carter is coming by sometime in the next few days to loan me his sound post tools, and when I give up, to install the sound post for me. Then we;ll turn it over to Phillipp, the violinist, for a test drive.

Whet happens when you tell people what you''re doing....
When my cousin stopped by to visit a few days ago and saw my fiddle kit, he said he had an old violin he'd found in the trash that was falling apart and would I be interested in seeing it. Of course. He brought it over today. It certainly is falling apart. The back separated from what were the sides with remarkable ease, leaving it all in full view. Written on the inside of the top in ink it says,
Made by Andrew Hyde
Northampton, Mass. 1887
Thee is also a label for some company. It looks as though this Andrew Hyde may have supplied violins to this company to sell under their brand brand name.
All the pieces are there. Putting it back together will be quite a challenge, but it should be do-able. Stay tuned..
