Rotosound strings

Post by Stray Feathers »

Has anyone tried Rotosound strings (made in the UK)? I have been using D'Addario as "starter" strings for my newly finished guitars, but the price has gone up quite a bit. (I was also taking advantage of a friend's bulk D'Addario order, but he is no longer buying strings.) They are now almost a dollar more a set in a music store locally than Rotosound equivalent. One player, in answer to a question on a European forum, listed perhaps 20 strings he had tried (many I had never heard of), from cheap to expensive, and poor to excellent quality, and of Rotosound he said, "Good standard strings, not expensive. Didn't get to be #1 in the UK by accident". I'll give them a try but would appreciate anyone else's experience. Bruce W.

I haven't tried them, but they have a cool website. I see they are about $10 for acoustic lights in a quick search which less than the Martin Lifespan 2.0's that I like. I have bought cheap strings in bulk too for initial setups but ran out a few builds ago and just use the Martins now. They aren't cheap but are very nice.

I see that stringsbymail.com has rotosound at $9.95. You can get pretty good bulk strings there for about $4 a set in packs of 25.

This thread just caught my eye. I’ve built a Hofner bass kit for a grand daughter and wasn’t very happy with the stock strings that came with the kit. So, I bought a set of Earnie Ball flat wound strings (105’s). They feel really nice and are much louder than the kit strings.
During all of this, I was watching the “Get Back” Beatles documentary and noticed Paul plying with black strings. There has been a lot of online chat about how Paul’s Hofner was set up for tone. A little Google work and I learned he was using the Rotosound Nylon strings during that recording session.

I ordered a set to go on my next Hofner kit build. They cost about the same as Earnie Ball’s on Amazon. I’ll try to remember to report back in a few months.

I never did find Rotosound strings for acoustic guitar, without having to order across one border or another. A large chain in Canada which has a couple of stores near me carries some for electrics, though. A luthier friend left this world last fall and I was able to buy some strings from his stock so I am good for a bit, but I haven't stopped looking. Bruce W.

Hey Bruce. I found these on Amazon.I don’t know if there are any issues buying/shipping or tariff issues buying from BC.

Thanks Blindbo for looking into that. I did check Amazon a while back with no solid leads, but your link took me, in a roundabout way, from Amazon.com to Amazon.ca, which lists the ones I would try, but with no price, and from there to a seller called Solo Guitars, which I deal with in Canada pretty regularly. Good price, lower shipping within Canada, so I will order some next time I place an order with Solo. Bruce W.

I’ve never tried these on an acoustic. How do they compare to the Martin SP’s?
