Thanks guys. I wish I knew about this forum before I started building. Yes, this was my first guitar, although not my first wood working project. The other stuff I have done (long bows, canoe, kayak, boat building) is completely different. I must say I enjoyed the process thoroughly. The finish is Behlen stringed instrument gloss laquer. I think I put on 8-10 coats, which is probably way too many, but I was horrified of sanding through the finish, so I definitely erred on the side of caution. I sort of approached this project like my first long bow project, with hope, but with no expectations of success

I figured I at least want to make it look good, in case it doesn't play worth a flip. But to my surprise, it plays well. I'm still tweaking the action a little, but overall the end result far exceeded my expectations. And of course, I sanded it with a range of paper starting at 400 going to 2000, then buffed. Again, that may have been a little overkill, but I got the desired effect. The back and sides are mahogany. For my next rig, I plan on building essentially the same guitar, but from scratch. I'll use rosewood on the back and sides instead of mahogany, and some sort of wood binding. There's just something wrong with plastic binding on a wooden guitar.....
BTW - My name is Mike, last name Birke. I put my name on the guitar in case it gets lost
