Violin #4 completed

Post by Kevin Sjostrand »

This violin is now finished. I let the finish cure good, over 2 months. 4 days ago I wet sanded and rubbed it out.
I think it turned out just fine. On the next one I'll try and put less finish on while still trying to get a deep color.

My previous #3 probably came out better in the precision fit area. I've got to work on that. But I'm happy with how it looks and sounds....well it hasn't really been played just my bowing the tuned strings....it seems to be very resonant and projects like crazy. Can't wait to have it played by a real player.

Since I'd strung it up in the white all I had to do to reassemble is to ream out the peg holes to remove finish in there, and the same for the end pin.

I decided to give this one to my almost 47 year old daughter; the mother of the 3 granddaughters that got the first 3 violins. She is a concert pianist, plays the flute and now wants to learn to play the violin.

She will receive it in April when they all come for their oldest sons college graduation.

Kevin, I don't know the first thing about fiddles, but your work is beautiful. Your daughter is a lucky gal!

Best wishes!

Beautiful! That's just amazing! My 1st guitars went to musician friends of mine and one of them plays beautiful Irish fiddle. He has been begging me to build him one and I really figured it was out of the question. But now I'm inspired!

Have you been able to find a professional violinist to play it? Due to some rather remarkable coincidences and happenings we currently have a concert violinist staying with us 4 nights a week. I'm tempted to build a violin just so he can tell me what is wrong with it! He hears sounds to which I am totally oblivious.

I actually was able to have an accomplished player play my first violin 2 years ago and he thought it was very good. He made it sound good. He pointed out a few things to me but I was encouraged

The next 2 (as well as the first) are being played daily by my granddaughters as they continue in their lessons and play for exams, church and such.

The most important thing is that they play and sound correctly so that's my main goal. If you follow the plans and specifics it's like a guitar. It should be at least acceptable and hopefully better than that.

It's really not that difficult and I'd encourage any guitar or ukulele maker to give it a try. Quite fun to build.
