No pore filling required!

Post by Kevin Sjostrand »

I did some testing on a scrap piece of the Macauaba that I used for my latest guitar that is waiting to be finished. It seems like this wood is not very porous, I experimented. I sprayed 4 light coats of sanding sealer on the wood and sanded it flat. It looks like all, if any pores were filled. I sprayed one coat of lacquer over this, and it is flat and filled.
I did the same to a scrap piece of Sapele which the neck is made from, with the same results.
I am very excited that I will not have to pore fill this guitar.
Now I am not sure about the bloodwood, but it does not appear to be very porous either.
So, Ken Hundley, when you get to that stage on your Macauaba guitar, you should not have pores to fill either!!
Just thought I'd share this tid bit with you all.
Build on! Ooops......"CRAFT ON".

Thats great!

With respect to the "build" thing, I believe Rick was taking umbrage with calling a finished guitar a "build" instead of a guitar. But I could be wrong about that. I ran out of "mind reading juice" long ago. Used up nearly a lifetime supply in the first months of marriage. What a waste. It didnt help a bit. LOL

Slacker! Kevin, I did a maple SJ a couple of years ago that required no pore filler either but for the neck. It was nice to skip that process!

NICE! I can't wait! I had a little set back in mine.....the back set warped the opposite way in one day, and no matter what I do, I can't get it to warp back. I removed the braces, but cracked it a bit trying to remove the center reinforcement strip. It is all repairable, I just have to get creative removing the Center strip. I haven't been able to put much time in between work, some winter storm damage, and my mother in law having open heart surgery. She's uncomfortable, but motoring through like a champ. It's just me and the boys this week, though, since my wife is with her fam. Any time I get is spent on Black Beauty, will probably be strung up by early next week, if not sooner. The black is well worth it though, she's beautiful. I'll post pics.

Great news, though Kevin. I think Zebra can get like that if you get a good, well dried peice that hasn't checked at all. Can't wait to get to the finish on this one, though I need to start the neck first.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.
