Birchwood Casey Walnut Stain - anyone use?

Post by awguitar »

Hi All - I know tru oil is used a lot for finishing, but has anyone tried the Birchwood Casey Walnut stain? It is super cheap on amazon and is water based, which is kind of ideal for staining inside the house (without the oil minwax smell). Just curious if anyone has had luck with it before I purchase. Looking to darken a light mahogany to a darker brown. Thanks All!!

I went for it today with the Casey walnut dye. At first i diluted with water and applied with a cloth and it only darkened slightly. I allowed it dry and went full strength. Came out pretty good and the color is exactly what i was looking for. A dark brown with maybe a hint of red, but not that horrible orange look. almost looks like medium rosewood. looking forward to adding a seal coat of shellac tomorrow to see what it might look like when finished. then on to grain filling. Going with Aqua coat. I will try to post some pics tomorrow.
