I ran into a problem with the traditional french polish technique. I have a plate in my neck as well as other neurological problems, so I have very weak arms and hands, especially on my right side. I still want something approximating a french polish on my guitar. I don't have the room or equipment to set up a spray booth, so I searched the internet for a viable alternative. I ran across this technique, which is doable for me.

Shellac, varnish and even lacquer can all be applied with a brush. Shellac applied by brush doesn't get as hard as done with FP. Lacquer may aggravate your neurological condition. But a brushed on spirit varnish may be a viable alternative.

Another option is a product like Qualasole http://www.shellac.net/behlen_qualasole.html. I have had results that look very much like a FP only padding on the product. It is physically easier than french polish, I just use a rag with the product and apply it with the grain. When it feels dry to the touch (moments) I wipe on another layer. Some of the same rules apply. The pad should sweep on and off the surface never stopping on the wood. What is eliminated is the circular polishing in FP as the pad is drying.
