Tru Oil over french polish ?

Post by Zen »

I have applied 3 coats of French Polish so far on my Bearclaw spruce top and I notice a few little runs in the finish so I presume I will lightly sand these away before I continue ?.

Can I use Tru oil or similar as a finish coat over the french polish ? I came across a mention of it after I had started french polishing and it seems like a great way to finish a guitar ? Anyone used it over french polish and if so how many more coats of the french polish should I use before applying tru oil ?

Thanks to all here for advise so far and its great to have a forum such as this for beginners like me

This person has been a big help to me in the past, when I had questions about TO. Just send him an email and ask your question, and maybe post the response here on the Forum?

Tru Oil is a great finish but has its limitations. I like Tru oil on my necks (done 2 bodies with it too), and once padded a coat of shellac on before my oil coats, to darken the mahogany a bit. So I'd guess it goes over french polish just fine. I'd take care of the runs/drips before starting on the oil though.

Sand at least up to 600 - some go all the way up into micro-mesh - oil finishes don't build so what you see is what you get when it comes to the wood. No covering up mistakes, in other words.

Our own Brian Howard has a video on YouTube where he talks about his french polish. I found it the other week, actually. Might be worth a look, if you're still on the fence regarding FP.

TO is tough and wears well - witness so many folks using it on necks - and also is a NON-penetrating oil which is actually a varnish, so it does not hinder tone or volume. I have a short very non-professional vid on you tube:
